BAT tried to buy the international tobacco interests of RJR-Nabisco but lost out to Japan Tobacco which, apparently, bid over $1 billion more.

BAT (British American Tobacco) has had a tortuous corporate history but is now firmly set on an expansionist track. Recent events include the demerger of the financial side of the business to form The Zurich Financial Services Group, and the proposed merger with Rothmans International, which would give it 16% of the global cigarette market. It currently has around 14% of the UK market.

BAT is the world's second largest cigarette manufacturer. State Express 555 is its leading brand. BAT manufactures cigarettes in over 50 countries.
